A display module should rarely be selected by resolution and diagonal alone. Interface, touch technology, mechanical integration, power supply and software support together determine whether a prototype can later become a reliable device.
1. Choose the interface first
HDMI is often convenient for rapid integration and established operating systems. DSI, DPI and eDP can suit compact devices, but platform support must be checked carefully. SPI displays are useful for smaller interfaces when the available data rate and refresh behaviour match the application.
2. Consider resolution and size together
Higher resolution does not automatically improve usability. Font size, viewing distance, pixel density and operating-system scaling should be evaluated together. For industrial controls, a clearly readable interface is often more important than the highest possible pixel count.
3. Touch technologies are not interchangeable
Capacitive touch supports modern gestures and a clear surface. Resistive touch can be useful for gloved or simple input. The touch controller, available interface and driver support also need to be verified.
4. Plan mechanics and environment early
Outer dimensions, active area, mounting points, connector direction, cable routing and cooling belong in the first selection round. Embedded devices may also require checks for brightness, viewing angle and protective cover materials.
5. Test with the target platform
Before a production decision, test the display with the actual computing platform, software, power supply and cable length. A short prototype test exposes integration risks before enclosure or PCB decisions become fixed.
